How to use this snag list template

    1. Add the project details. Project, address, who inspected and the date. They go at the top of every download.
    2. Add a snag for each defect. Tap Add snag, take or choose a photo, then fill in where it is, the trade, how serious it is and what is wrong.
    3. Download and send. PDF for the client or contractor, Excel to sort and track, Word if you want to edit the layout. All three include the photos.

What goes in a snag list

RefA number for each snag, so everyone can talk about "snag 14" without confusion. The template numbers them for you.
PhotoOne clear photo of the defect, close enough to see it and wide enough to find it. A photo settles most arguments about what was meant.
LocationSpecific enough to walk straight to it: level, room or area, and the wall or item. "Level 2, riser cupboard, east wall" beats "riser".
TradeWho fixes it. This lets you split one list into a list per subcontractor.
SeverityHow urgent it is. This template uses Critical, Major and Minor (see below).
DescriptionWhat is wrong and, where it is clear, what puts it right.
Action byThe person or company responsible, and a date if you need one.
StatusOpen or fixed, so the same list works for the re-inspection.

Writing a snag description that gets fixed

A good description lets someone who was not there find the defect, understand it and fix it first time. Say where, what is wrong and what fixes it.

Paint badBedroom 2, wall behind the door: paint run about 300mm long at head height. Sand back and repaint the full wall.
Socket looseKitchen, worktop socket left of the hob: faceplate not tight to the wall and moves when a plug goes in. Refix and check the back box.
Fire stoppingLevel 2, riser cupboard: two cable penetrations through the compartment wall left open. Fire stop with the specified system and record it on the register.

    Critical, major and minor

There is no single standard for snag severity, so agree one with whoever you send the list to. This template uses three levels:

    Questions

Is the snag list template free?

Yes. There is nothing to sign up for and no limit on downloads. It runs in your browser.

Where is my snag list saved?

On your own device, in this browser. Nothing you type or photograph is uploaded. If you clear your browser data or use a private window, the list is lost, so download it when you finish.

Does it work on site with no signal?

Once the page has loaded, you can keep adding snags and photos with no signal, and the downloads are made on your phone. Open the page before you lose signal.

Do the photos go in the Excel file?

Yes. The PDF, Excel and Word files all include the photo for each snag. In Excel the photo sits in its own column next to the snag, and the list has filters for sorting by trade, severity or status.

What is the difference between a snag list and a snagging report?

A snag list is the working list of defects: where each one is, what is wrong and who fixes it. A snagging report is the finished document you send, usually with photos and a summary. The PDF from this template works as a simple snagging report.
